With this fascinating tour you will touch the soul of Venice with one of the most complete and fascinating visits to St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
St Mark's Cathedral Venice interior: a guided tour through time to admire the greatest treasure of Venice in all its glory. Referred to as the ‘Golden Basilica’ from the predominant colour of the mosaics and numerous valuables kept inside, St Mark’s Basilica combines faith and the pomp of the ancient Republic of Venice. With its five domes, the finely carved front with bas-reliefs, sculptures and mosaics, St Mark’s church in Venice is a treasure of inestimable value.
The first section of the Basilica dates back to the IX century when the first building was built to house the precious relics of St Mark which came to Venice from Alexandria, Egypt. A simple private chapel of the Doges of Venice during the Republic period, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice was crowned a cathedral only in 1807.
Our tour will lead you through the elaborate architectural structures and the precious relics preserved in St Mark’s Venice interior, not to mention the extraordinary mosaics of which you will be shown the history and biblical scenes represented.
The guided tour will last about an hour, during which you can admire the Golden Pall and the Treasure of St Mark’s Basilica.
Used as the precious backdrop of the altar of St Mark’s Basilica only at major liturgical feasts, the Golden Pall is considered one of the most valuable objects in the world, consisting of sheets of gilded silver and decorated with enamels made with the émail cloisonné technique. The golden pall was completed in 1345 with the setting of 1927 precious stones by master goldsmith Buoninsegna.
This fascinating tour will end with a visit to the Treasures of St Mark’s Basilica, kept in two rooms which are the only remains of the first palace of the Doges of Venice, dating back to the ninth century AD. The Treasure of St Mark’s Basilica is made up of 283 pieces, of which there are precious Byzantine and Islamic objects which came to Venice after the looting of Constantinople in 1204. The other pieces are essentially gifts made to the church over the centuries or acquisitions. The room on the right hand side contains the ancient liturgical objects of St Mark’s Basilica, mainly of Byzantine origins, and in the room on the left you can admire the collection of reliquaries of St Mark’s Basilica, a gathering of remarkable artistic and religious value.

Please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the tour departure time. At the tour departure point you will meet a representative who will check your vouchers and give you information to do the tour.
During the winter period (from November 1st to March 31st) the tour is BILINGUAL, because explanations will be provided in two languages if the audience provenience is mixed.
Access to the Basilica is only permitted to visitors with suitable attire (no shorts or vest or tops) and backpacks are not allowed for safety reasons.
The Procuratoria di San Marco reserves the right to PROHIBIT VISITS and access to the basilica at any time and without notice for reasons of force majeure (e.g. high water) and/or safety reasons. In cases of extra liturgical ceremonies, exceptional high tides or other special occasions, access to St Mark's Basilica may not be permitted and therefore the tour will not take place.
No credit or refunds will be given in the case of a no show (if you don't show up at the meeting point at the time indicated on your voucher).
This is a collective tour, which means there might be other participants going on the tour with you.
Please note that, due to the particular morphological structure of Venice and the logistic problems resulting from it, we cannot guarantee that the whole tour is accessible to people with limited mobility. This means that people with walking difficulties and wheelchair users could not be able to access some parts of the itinerary.
